magazine cut outs, passe-partout Collage, installation / Diptych, 80 x 100 cm (each)
Commissioned by WARP Contemporary Art Platform.
How is it possible to create with existing imagery a completely new story? How can propaganda and biased journalism influence our daily views? This was the premise behind this commissioned piece by the WARP Contemporary Art Platform, where I worked with two original copies of Signaal, a German military propaganda magazine.
‘Nazi is s*xy' a homo-erotic visual fiction through the détournement of these images. The apparently arbitrary choice of homo eroticism on this pieces, feeds from a similarities with common scenes of gay male porn films, in which youth, whiteness, and virility are also valued traits, as well as the dominant Greco-Roman body archetype.
The starting point of the work was the realisation of my own attraction to the male bodies displayed on the pages of the magazine and the consequent realization that this ideal still permeates body politics in present time.
Through my own choice and recombination of faces, bodies and phallic structures, a new narrative that goes completely against the original intended use of the images is created (where in fact homosexuality was persecuted).
Here, collage is done much more through the gravitational force that certain images have together, thus transforming their context and turning them in signifiers of the suggested narrative.
This way, the work goes beyond propaganda or a particular socio-political condition, but also addresses notions of structure, context and meaning.
